A heat pump is a straight AC that runs in reverse for heat. In Palm Beach County winters (rarely below 50°F), heat pumps are 2 3x more efficient than electric strip heat which is what straight ACs use for backup heat.

If your home runs on electric heat, a heat pump pays for itself in 4 6 years. If you have a gas furnace, stick with straight AC plus the existing furnace.
